The Fisher Collection

A STELLAR COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Comprising more than 1,100 works by 185 artists, the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection is one of the greatest private collections of modern and contemporary art in the world. SFMOMA has forged a historic partnership with the Fisher family to share this extraordinary collection with the people of San Francisco, housing and displaying art from the Fishers' holdings alongside works from the SFMOMA collection in a new museum expansion.

The Fishers started collecting art in the 1970s. Their first purchases included prints, which were used to adorn the walls of an office building for Gap, the retail company they cofounded in 1969. Soon, their passion grew and they began adding paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, and other media.

Over the years, the Fishers amassed a museum-quality collection of works by 20th- and 21st-century American and European masters from movements including Pop Art, Figurative Art, Minimalism, Abstraction, Conceptualism, Photorealism, and Color-field painting. The Fishers collected the work of artists they admired in depth, and the collection features major groupings of seminal works by Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, Anselm Kiefer, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, and Andy Warhol, to name a few.

Selections from the collection were on view for the first time at SFMOMA in the 2010 exhibition Calder to Warhol: Introducing the Fisher Collection. We look forward to presenting more of this stellar collection when the expansion is complete.
